In the spirit of previous posts: what do you think of the west coast/bay area deadhead who thinks s/he's somehow superior to deadheads from other parts of the world?

You know what I'm talking about!!!

there is something that it is not up for debate. the DEAD were a west coast band my man. they came up out in the west, in the early years the east coast jaunts were mostly bill graham productions, and they did the college circuit in 1970 and onward....

but YOU CANNOT CONTEND, according to SETLIST.COM, the shows played in the bay area OUTNUMBER those played in Boston and NY, 523 to 209.

523 to 209!!!

the vibe was different. MAYBE 209 shows packed as much punch as the 523, but nonetheless...they spent a lot more time out west spinning yarn than they did putting up a storm in the east....

[...]is something burning?.....whoaaa

i guess then i'll have to speak out on behalf of the rest of us :

as numerous, and grate, as west coast shows were
and as fun and near to each other as east coast shows were
let's not forget the simply stupendous shows from red rocks, telluride, alpine valley (home of the return with terrapin station shows) and deer creek!\

NO ONE area of this grate land of ours has a lock on 'the best shows' nor does quantity automatically trump quality.

but what do i know sittin' here in "fly-over country"
i know i've enjoyed the ride!

I agree - it was all about the music - and there is no way one coast (let alone one venue) trumps any other.

The question is about deadHEADS from the west who act superior, not which side the band played more or better. I mean--right?

My response is, there will always be "scene" people who've got the look, the 'tude, the parlance down, who hang together and disdain the others as being lesser than. From straight-edge to crusties to Burning fucking Man, this rule maintains. These are usually quite attractive people, and if they weren't busy being the flowering, god-given embodiment of this scene, they'd be playing the same role in that one over there. In fact, scene migration often happens over time: the picture-perfect-punker of '84,impeccably booted, stenciled, and spiked, was the beskirted, dreaded, page-slangin' "family" bro of '91, with the kind Westphalia. Six or seven years go by, and now our boy's the crusty, bandannaed, black-hooded,train-hopping anarchist, blathering about "Mumia" and touring with the WTO.

Today, our boy most likely finds himself in lock step with the "Vice" magazine shtick, the ironic retrograde eighties/disco/cokehead/redneck/mod amalgam, says "nigger" a lot, mocks the poor, takes nothing seriously, in tumultuous relationship with trucker hats, hates the kids, mocks punks and the dead and crust and "Adbusters" and all the other shit he's fallen for over the years, currently doing market research or "viral" product placement of some sort, which is fine because he grasps the inherent contradictions of it all. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Dude, "grasps."

His femmes and fellows come from all coasts. Fuck 'em.

hampton 80s>bayarea80s

Why did they choose the Warlocks revival breakouts there?

Then again, I'm a self-righteous prick that needs to go psychoanalyze the impact of Yoko on the B-52s so I can more fully appreciate the fact Brian Epstein blew John.

hey hey...what;s up devil?

i dont contend any particular shows, just that there is no dispute.... they played more shows out west, and ESPECIALLY in the bay area....

-- the concerts on the west coast, in quality and content and whatever significance one can apply or not apply, are generally of different quality or vibe than east coast shows....this is something that may or may not be discernible via tape.

regardless, IF ANYTHING, there is ALSO NO DISPUTE that the shows played in the east coast METROPOLIS of DC to BOSTON are fueled by a unique energy their own....

but 523 to 209.....those are two different expeiriences

Hey, those damn west coast shows actually led to my move across country, so what the fuck do I know? I've always believed that the California Chamber of Commerce owed Barlowe and Weir a hefty sum for Estimated Prophet. You know I'm just one contrary ornery son-of-a-bitch (yep, my mama was one big ass beeyatch). I had fun in Hampton, Hartford, MSG, Fox, Richmond, etc. but damn if the Greek didn't make me pack my bags - even if Jer tried to convince me the wine ain't sweeter, the grass ain't greener....
